Security First IT attended an event at the World Trade Center in Boston, MA in September 2018. Barbara Corcoran, from the TV series Shark Tank, was there too. She told her story of how she took a $1,000 loan and built a multi-million dollar business.
When it was time for a cybersecurity panel discussion, Barbara became the moderator. The purpose was to help business owners find the right IT service providers to protect their companies. She began by explaining that today’s businesses should understand the greater need for cybersecurity, how the market is changing, and be more aware of advanced threats in their industries.
Barbara wants to know, “Why aren’t there more women in IT? This seems to be a very male-dominated space.”
“The way I see it, “ I explained, “there are a lot of movements trying to bring more women into IT to change that inequity, but more needs to be done. Our company, Security First IT, makes every effort to diversify its talent. Hiring people who look and think alike won’t give us a variety of skills and results necessary for finding unique solutions to our client’s problems. We look forward to having more women to provide different perspectives, four Security First IT, but in the industry as a whole as well.”
“Career opportunities have changed across the world within only fifty years when historically changes occurred much more gradually. Our school systems are only just catching up on providing the right education, training, and technical skills for jobs created by these innovations. The recent push in STEM education has put more girls and women in front of the science, technology, engineering, and math careers of the future. The increased interest in these fields will give us more professionals who understand computers, servers, and network systems. It will begin to reduce the gap between men and women in the field of cybersecurity too. It’s just a matter of time.”
Up next, our final article of the Barbara Corcoran cybersecurity series, she asks if your business IT service providers must be local to get the job done.
